Roller chain pullers

Postby millrat on Sun Nov 23, 2008 10:40 am

Any cool tools for pulling the ends of roller (drive) chain together? I have tried a few different things but seem to end up using leather lace most of the time. Is there something better?

Roller Chain Holders

McMaster-Carr sells a roller chain holder for putting in master links if that's what your looking for catalog pg. 1008

Chain holders work like a third hand to help you insert and fasten connecting links. Simply hook the jaws into each end of your chain and turn the handle on top (a knurled screw knob on Style A and a T-handle on Style B) until chain ends are close enough to insert new link. Insert the connecting link and fasten. Made of cold-rolled steel.
For ANSI Max
Chain Jaw Closed
Nos. Pitch Spread Lg. x Wd. Each

A 35-60 3/8"- 3/4" 2" 3 3/4" x 2 11/16" 6052K14 $18.17

B 40-80 1/2"-1" 3 1/2" 8 7/8" x 5 15/16" 6052K18 32.23

On 140-2 and 240-2 roller chain I have used eye bolts ( 4 of them) two at the same location parellel to each other on either side of the break. Taking two bars of a diameter that will fit through the two sets of eye bolts and connencting a come along between the vars across the break, care to be taken first to space the ey bolts far enough either side of the break to be able to strectch out the come along and retract the requuired slack. Works pretty good as long as there is some other form of final takup adjustment in the system as the eyebolts tend to trough an angle into the chain taking away a bit of the total slack adjustment.

On the safety side of this it is important to always remember lock out tag out procedures and use the heaviest eyebolts that will fit through the chain that have long enough shanks to get 2H nuts and hardened washers in the other side. Also the bigger the eye, the larger diameter bar that can be used. In this case bigger is ALWAYS better.

Use care and be safe
